Getting to Boston

[ Visas | By Plane | By Car | Parking | By Train or Bus ]

Visas

IPP26 attendees who are not US citizens will need a valid passport to enter the country. Some may also need a visa. For more details about this, see the US State Department's visa page.

The US government has instituted a new Visa Waiver Program in 2005, enabling citizens from 27 countries to enter the US without a visa. To take advantage of the program, you must have a machine-readable passport; recently issued passports must have a digital photograph and/or an integrated chip. Citizens of the following countries are eligible to participate:

  • Andorra
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brunei
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Liechtenstein
  • Luxembourg
  • Monaco
  • the Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • San Marino
  • Singapore
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

For more information about the Visa Waiver Program, and how to obtain a machine-readable passport, see this link.

If you have questions about visas, please contact your nearest US consulate or embassy. For a list of US embassies and consulates, see the US State Department's list.

By Plane

There are direct connections to Boston from most large cities in Europe, the USA, and the Far East. The Hilton hotel is located in Boston's Logan airport. You can walk from your plane to the hotel, or take the Hilton's free shuttle bus. The bus runs frequently and takes only a few minutes. The map below shows where the Hilton hotel is, just "south" of Central Parking.

By Car

Under normal conditions, Boston's Logan Airport is easily accessible by car via major highways. Just take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) all the way East through Boston.

Detour warning! On Monday, July 10, a ceiling panel fell in one of the tunnels leading to the airport. As of July 21, it seems unlikely that the roads will be back to normal before the IPP. If you are planning to drive, then be alert for detour signs. We will update this page as news becomes available.

  • From the North: Take I-93 to Exit 24B (no detour).
  • From the South: Take I-93 to Exit 2, Exit 26, or Exit 27 and follow the detour signs through the streets. They will direct you to I-93 Southbound, from which you can reach Exit 24B.
  • From the West: I suggest taking I-90 (Mass. Turnpike) to I-95 North (a.k.a. Rt.128) to I-93 South, then Exit 24B. You can also take I-90 to Exit 18 to Storrow Drive to I-93 South; or you can take I-90 to Exit 24B [sic] (I-93 North) and then take Exit 23, Exit 26, or Exit 27 and follow the detour signs.
Check the
Massport web site, especially the page on transportation options and alternative routes, for updated information.

If you do not want to deal with airport traffic, or airport parking (see below), one option is Logan Express. This is a bus service operated by MassPort, the same agency that operates the airport. You can park in one of four suburban locations:

  • Braintree (south of Boston)
  • Framingham (west of Boston)
  • Peabody or Woburn (north of Boston)
Parking costs $11 per day, $66 per week. The bus fare is $11 one way, with discounts for round trips and senior citizens; children under 12 ride free. Buses leave every half hour during most of the day on week days, at least hourly on weekends. (Prices and schedules are as of October, 2005; check the link above for current information.)

Parking

The most convenient option is to park at the hotel. The following rates represent a 15% IPP discount:

Number of Hours Self Parking Valet Parking
0–1 $6.80 $8.50
1–3 $14.45 $17.00
3–7 $20.40 $22.10
7–24 $22.10 $25.50

The cheapest option we have found near the airport is at Thrifty Airport Parking. If you print out this coupon, the price is $13 per day or $73 for a week. To use the service, drive to their location in Revere, MA (see map on their web site). They will park your car for you. Take the Thrifty shuttle bus to the Hilton (be sure to ask the bus driver to take you to the Boston Logan Airport Hilton.) When you want to retrieve your car, call Thrifty at (781) 289-0002 to ask for their shuttle bus to come to the Hilton, or meet their shuttle (which comes every five minutes) at one of the terminals.

By Train or Bus

Buses and trains stop at Boston's South Station. From there, it is a short ride to the airport (Terminal A or E) on the new Silver Line. (It may be simpler to take a taxi, but it will be more expensive and probably take longer.) The fare is hard to beat: $1.25. According to the schedule, the trip takes less than 20 minutes, and buses leave every 10 to 15 minutes.
